Chrissi Island: Information

Chrissi Island

Chrissi island, the “golden island” (a reference to many billions of tiny sea shells on the “white” sandy beaches that glow in the moonlight during the night) is the southernmost tip of Europe with a vegetation near to tropical and a beautiful cedar tree forest amongst the sand dunes; probably the last existing in Europe.

Before leaving you’ll have enough time to explore the island. In the northwest is the church of Saint Nikolas that was built in the 13th century, just southwest of the church are old graves and northeast of the church near the coast there’s an old salt-pan, the only house on the island and low stone built walls.
Maybe you’ll see one of the many migrating birds that pass the island. About 120 different kinds of birds visit the island while migrating. Now and then Caretta-Caretta sea turtles visit the reptiles and hares that inhabit the island.

Enjoy the sun, the white beaches, have lunch in the only tavern on the island and swim in crystal clear waters..
